Exercise and Wellness in Survivorship

Our goal is to help connect survivors with community resources and introduce them to therapists with advanced training, experience and desire to work with oncology patients, says Beaumont physical therapist and program coordinator, Mary Alice Hewelt. We have individualized programs and activities available to help survivorswherever they are in their recovery. The cancer survivorship exercise and wellness event will include physical review therapists who specialize in working with breast cancer patients with lymphedema. These patients may feel aching, pain, swelling, weakness or tightness in the affected arm as a result of breast surgery or radiation treatment. Those attending the event can learn about an exercise program to meet their specific needs. Following a screening and approval by their physician, participants can take part in a supervised exercise program alone or with others, or can receive an activity plan that can be completed at home or in a fitness center.
